Lowermost Jurassic dinosaur ecosystem from the Bleymard Strait (southern France): sedimentology, mineralogy, palaeobotany and palaeoichnology of the …
2021
AbstractWe report the first Hettangian theropod tracksite (~200 Ma) yielding a rich accumulation of plant remains from the Bleymard Strait (southern France). It constitutes an excellent opportunity to reconstruct lowermost Jurassic ecosystems hosting dinosaurs and which are still poorly documented in this area. Two morphotypes of tridactyl tracks are distinguished. They share similarities with Grallator and Kayentapus. Plant-bearing beds yield abundant leafy axes (Pagiophyllum peregrinum), male cones (Classostrobus sp.), wood (Brachyoxylon sp.) and pollen of conifers (Classopollis classoides). Sedimentological, petrological and mineralogical analyses demonstrated that, in the Dolomitic Form…
Influence of dissolved organic matter on rare earth elements and yttrium distributions in coastal waters
2010
International audience; Data collected during this study indicate that dissolved Y and REE (rare earth element) behaviour can be monitored through shale-normalised ratios. Relationships occurring between these ratios suggest that leaching from lithogenic materials is the main source of REE in the studied area. This process involves riverine detrital matter in the inner area of the Gulf of Palermo. Features of shale-normalised patterns and the relationship recognised between dissolved Fe and Y/Ho suggest that REE are released from Fe-rich coatings of atmospheric dust. Observed similarities between dissolved Fe and chlorophyll- content suggest that leaching of Fe-rich atmospheric particulates…
Oedenburg.
Chemostratigraphy of the early Pliocene diatomite interval from MIS AND-1B core (Antarctica): Palaeoenvironment implications
2013
The AND-1B drill core (1285m-long) was recovered, inside the ANDRILL (ANtarctic geological DRILLing) Program, during the austral summer of 2006/07 from beneath the floating McMurdo Ice Shelf. Drilling recovered a stratigraphic succession of alternating diamictites, diatomites and volcaniclastic sediments spanning about the last 14Ma. A core portion between 350 and 480mbsf, including a 80m-thick diatomite interval recording the early Pliocene warming event, was investigated in term of opal biogenic content and element geochemistry. Across the diatomite interval, in spite of the lithological uniformity, a fluctuating biogenic opal profile mirrors the δ18O record, testifying a decrease in prod…
First xiphosuran traceway in the middle Muschelkalk facies (Middle Triassic) of the Catalan Basin (NE Iberian Peninsula)
2021
In the last decade, the first ichnoassamblages from the middle Muschelkalk facies (upper Anisian-middle Ladinian) of the Catalan Basin (NE Iberian Peninsula) have been discovered. Herein, the first xiphosuran trace fossils are described from the locality of Penya Rubí, a newly discovered ichnosite from the Catalan Basin. The finding opens a window into peri-Tethys ecosystems with coastal influence. The traceway is referred to the ichnogenus Kouphichnium, a locomotion trace attributed to xiphosurans. The traceway preserves telson grooves and different imprint morphologies from the various appendages. The traceway pattern and arrangement of the different traces suggest a crawling locomotion s…
8000 years of coastal changes on a western Mediterranean island: A multiproxy approach from the Posada plain of Sardinia
2018
Abstract A multi-proxy palaeoenvironmental investigation was conducted to reconstruct the Holocene history of coastal landscape change in the lower Posada coastal plain of eastern Sardinia. In the Mediterranean region, coastal modifications during the Holocene have been driven by a complex interplay between climate, geomorphological processes and human activity. In this paper, millennial-scale human-sea level-environment interactions are investigated near Posada, one of the largest coastal plains in eastern Sardinia. Biostratigraphic and palynological approaches were used to interpret the chrono-stratigraphy exhibited by a series of new cores taken from the coastal plain. This new study elu…
Middle Miocene foraminifera from Canals (Valencia, western Mediterranean). Biostratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental aspects
2020
The age and the palaeoenvironmental conditions of the tap marls outcroppings near the locality of Canals in the south of the Valencia Province (E Spain) are discussed. Based on the planktonic foraminifera assemblages, mainly the species Globorotalia praemenardii , these tap marls are dated as Serravallian in age (middle Miocene). The analysis of the foraminiferal assemblages suggests a relatively well-ventilated uppermiddle bathyal environment, with only a moderate oxygen deficiency throughout most of the studied section. The rather cool waters indicated by the planktonic foraminifera (e.g. Globigerina bulloides ) are compatible with the decreasing temperatures trend during the middle Mioce…
Benthic foraminifera and environmental changes in the Quaternary of the western Mediterranean coast: the core of Xeraco, Valencia, Spain
2020
The evolution of the benthic foraminiferal assemblages from a 60 m core drilled in the Quaternary lagoon of Xeraco (Valencia, Spain) is studied. Two moments of warm climate, high sea-level and maximal marine influence in the lagoon have been identified. The first one at the base of the core, punctuated by highly frequent changes during the Upper Pleistocene, and the other one in the upper end of the series during the Holocene. The presence of a middle core section with low diversity and a nearly total absence of marine foraminifers is interpreted as a regressive interval of cold climate conditions linked to a glacial stage.
Geological context and micromammal fauna characterisation from the karstic infilling of La Pedrera (Albaida, Valencia, E Spain)
2020
La Pedrera is a new palaeontological site located south of the province of Valencia, between the Betic and Iberian Ranges, in a cavity filled with sediments inside a tufa formation. Roughly 260 fossil remains, corresponding to 14 taxa, have been recovered and studied from Unit III. Six rodents (Microtus sp., M. sp. gr. M. (Terricola) duodecimcostatus-lusitanicus, Microtus sp. gr. M. brecciensis-cabrerae, Arvicola sapidus, Eliomys quercinus, and Apodemus sp. gr. sylvaticusfl avicollis), one lagomorph (Oryctolagus cf. cuniculus), three insectivores (Soricinae indet., Crocidura sp., and Talpa cf. europaea) and four bats (Myotis blythii, Rhinolophus cf. ferrumequinum, Myotis bechsteinii, and Rh…
PALAEOECOLOGY AND TAPHONOMY OF THE STRAIGHT-TUSKED ELEPHANT LATE MIDDLE PLEISTOCENE SITE OF POGGETTI VECCHI (SOUTHERN TUSCANY, ITALY)
2018
Works for the construction of thermal pools at Poggetti Vecchi, near Grosseto (Tuscany, Italy) exposed an accumulation of fossil bones, largely belonging to the straight-tusked elephant Palaeoloxodon antiquus, mixed up with stone and wooden tools. The site is radiometrically dated to the late Middle Pleistocene, and the artefacts were thus created by early Neanderthals. Palaeobiological and taphonomic analyses of the fauna remains are part of a more general, multiproxy study of the site that provides new information on MIS 7-6 transition, as well as on human-animal interactions.
